The Children's Center Head Start/Early Head Start is a federally funded program that provides no cost services to qualifying families who reside in the community. Comprehensive services are provided to pregnant women and their partners and children from birth to 5. Child development, health and family services are provided through a variety of program options designed to meet the needs of low-income and at risk families
.

JOB SUMMARY

This position supervises and teaches children in the Head Start Program.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Coordinates and delivers instruction and care for assigned children.
  • Documents client arrival and departure.
  • Administers developmental assessments for the purpose of identifying student needs and developing individual lesson plans.
  • Develops and implements lesson plans, including individualized child plans and indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Implements current curriculum.
  • Monitors students in a variety of settings.
  • Maintains student files and records.
  • Implements academic, behavior, health and nutrition plans for students.
  • Completes quarterly check-points.
  • Prepares a monthly newsletter.
  • Schedules and implements home visits.
  • Administers medication according to policies and procedures.
  • Attends required training.
  • Prepares incident reports.
  • Prepares and serves meals.
  • Communicates and meets with parents; schedules and participates in parent conferences.
  • Ensures compliance with safety standards.
  • Attends monthly Lead Teacher meetings.
  • Performs related duties.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Site Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include licensing requirements, Children's Center policies and procedures, Head Start requirements, and Health Department regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application. 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related instructional and child-care duties. The unique needs of each child contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to participate in the teaching of children. Success in this position results in the efficient and effective provision of programming to children.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in a classroom and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to contagious or infectious diseases. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
  • Working Conditions:
    • The work is typically performed while standing and walking or while intermittently sitting or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and medium weight objects and occasionally heavy objects.The employee may climb ladders. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
    • The work is typically performed in a classroom. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
    • This position is classified as Medium work for physical exertion requirements. Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. 
  • Physical Activity Requirements:
    • Employee is required to obtain the assistance of another employee when attempting to lift or carry objects in excess of 85 pounds. Employee needs to have the ability to work in a standing position for long periods of time (up to 8 hours). Employee must be aware that during the normal, routine performance of the essential functions, some of the following body movements may occur naturally, although they may not be a requirement of the job.

Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. (Associates Degree with a minimum of 18 hours in Early Childhood Education)
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years of experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment used.
