JOB SUMMARY


 


The Children's Center, a non-profit agency, is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of young children, one family at a time. Our mission is to nurture and educate children and their families. We provide opportunities for education, parenting support and resources to families in our communities.


 


The Children's Center Head Start/Early Head Start is a federally funded program that provides no cost services to qualifying families who reside in the community. Comprehensive services are provided to pregnant women and their partners and children from birth to 5. Child development, health and family services are provided through a variety of program options designed to meet the needs of low-income and at risk families.


 


This position is responsible for preparing meals for children and/or performing custodial duties at assigned sites.  This is an ON-CALL position as a substitute cook or custodian when a staff member is absent from work.


 


MAJOR DUTIES


 



  • Assists with maintaining kitchen inventory of equipment, supplies and food.

     



  • Assists with cooking meals in accordance with approved menus.

     



  • Ensures compliance with Health Department requirements.

     



  • Stores food in designated areas.

     



  • Assists with cleaning work areas, tools and equipment; sanitizing kitchen.

     



  • Assist in cleaning and restocking dishes, cups and utensils.

     



  • Serves meals as needed.

     



  • Removes garbage; cleans garbage containers.

     



  • Assists in receiving food shipments.

     



  • Assists with cleaning assigned facilities; cleans floors, windows, office, classrooms, appliances and bathrooms.

     



  • Washes and restocks laundry.


 



  • Perform custodial duties when needed.

    KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION


     



  • Knowledge of the methods of preparing meals in quantity lots.

     



  • Knowledge of cooking times and temperatures of various foods and methods of preserving the flavor of food.

     



  • Knowledge of the principles of personal and food sanitation.

     



  • Skill in the preparation and serving of food.

     



  • Skill in cleaning and sanitizing kitchens and kitchen tools and equipment.

     



  • Skill in maintaining routine records.

     



  • Skill in the custodial maintenance of public buildings.

     



  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.


 


 


Job Qualifications:

 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


 



  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment used.

  • Must be 18 years of age.

  • Must have high school diploma or GED Equivalent.

  • Must have a current Virginia Driver’s license.

  • Must demonstrate good communication skills.

  • Must hold a current Food Handlers card.

  • Must be familiar with USDA regulations.

  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of basic principals of good nutrition.

  • Must attend required pre-service and in-service training.

  • Must meet all physical, mental, moral and other requirements as set forth by Federal and State Regulations.

  • Must be familiar with all background of children we serve.

  • Must have current CPR and First Aid Certification.

  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds.

  • Must be able to perform basic computer applications such as utilizing Time Clock software.

  • Must be able to communicate through company email using Outlook.
