The Children's Center Head Start/Early Head Start is a federally funded program that provides no cost services to qualifying families who reside in the community. Comprehensive services are provided to pregnant women and their partners and children from birth to 5. Child development, health and family services are provided through a variety of program options designed to meet the needs of low-income and at risk families. 

 This position assists in supervising and teaching children at an assigned Community Center.

 

Pre-k or preschool teachers, instruct children under the age of five using creative methods such as art, music and hands-on learning.  The primary purpose of the educational program is to prepare students for kindergarten.  Pre-k teachers create daily lesson plans that teach social skills and personal hygiene, as well as introducing colors, shapes and numbers. They also introduce reading and writing to their classes and help children develop language skills. Pre-k teachers must also attend to the basic needs of young children, such as serving them food and beverages, putting on and taking off coats and changing diapers or assisting kids on bathroom visits. It is also important for pre-k teachers to maintain communication with the child's parents, particularly when there is a problem.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides an inviting learning environment following the Creative Curriculum, Second Step, TSG and other state and local curriculum documents.
  • Develops and implements daily lesson plans reflecting the needs of individual students and curriculum goals, including small group activities.
  • Assesses student progress by recording daily anecdotal records and by determining expected growth as stated in the curriculum goals.
  • Provides appropriate materials and experiences which address the social, physical, emotional, and intellectual needs of each student.
  • Provides a child-centered environment which has attractive displays, interest centers and exhibits of students' work.
  • Develops activities which promote strong home/school relations.
  • Communicates regularly with parents through individual parent conferences, home visits, journals, phone calls, etc.
  • Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, policy and administrative regulations.
  • Models, implements and assesses strategies related to learning, social, emotional and behavioral needs to enhance educational programming for all learners.
  • Follows guidelines, child care regulations and best practices to ensure a safe and age appropriate environment that promotes learning.
  • Implements a schedule that meets the required child care regulations.
  • Promotes effective interpersonal relations and engages in continuing professional growth activities.


QUALIFICATIONS:

The Pre-K Teacher will be thoroughly committed to our mission. All candidates must enjoy working with children, have a positive attitude, and serve as a role model for the youth in the program. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:

  • At least 1 year of experience working with children.
  • Past experience teaching children in the pre-kindergarten age group.
  • Ability to educate with age-appropriate language and teaching methods.
  • Degree in Education, with a focus on early childhood learning. Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education is preferred.
  • If applicant does not meet educational requirements, all teachers must hold, or be working towards a minimum of an Early Childhood Development Career Studies Certificate.  Teachers working toward the required education must be enrolled in at least one college course each semester.
  • Must be able to lift 65 lbs.
  • Must pass drug test and submit to background checks.
  • CPR / First Aid certified.
  • Familiarity using Microsoft Word and Excel.

Job Qualifications:
Ideal Candidate would have an Associates in Early Childhood Education, enrolled in courses to complete a degree in Early Childhood Education or be willing to enroll in courses to complete a degree in Early Childhood Education.
